My neighbor and her family has been going to AJ's for years. It was under her recommendation that I go there and get a calzone. After my first visit, we've had several subsequent visits and great experiences each time.

AJ's is a nice little restaurant in Higganum town center. The restaurant is a great family place that offers free icecream to kids with their meals (they hand out popcicles and frozen lemonade, but close enough). The interior is a typical Italian pizza place with these very pretty murals of an Italian scenery on the wall. The bathrooms are super clean and well stocked. Waitstaff is always friendly and always chats up their usual patrons. Every time I've come to dine, I always see at least one regular customer being chatted up.

The menu is typical, for a restaurant this type, with your usual pizza and salad selections. As ordered, I get a spinach calzone. It comes with a big bowl of marinara that is seasoned very well. The dough is the perfect thickness and it's paired with ricotta and mozzarella. It was by far the best calzone I've had in years.

My husband loves ordering the Buffalo Chicken salad. It is extra spicy and makes his nose run every time (and apparently, to him, that's a wonderful thing). My daughter has had a couple of the different kids meals. The portions are big (which is also great because she eats a ton). Even the hotdog is huge and she eats every bite.

On one occasion, we have ordered their pizza and it was just as delicious as their calzones. Although my family has other favorites in the restaurant, we often see other patrons order pizza and clean the trays.

Bottom line: It's probably the best pizza place in town and better than most of the pizza places in Middletown. So if you're in the area, take the extra five minutes and drive down. It'll be worth your while.

I think 4 stars is pretty generous overall rating for this place. It's higganum so your options are very limited. I ordered a large cheese pizza. It was priced well at 13.40 I believe. However, it was extremely greasy. It was not the worst pizza but not great. Definitely an old school pizza place that hasn't been touched in a ton of years.

Stopped in for a pizza today with my father. Cheese pizza very tasty crust very nice pie. My general rule is if you can make a cheese pizza taste good everything built on that platform will taste great.

AJ's has the best pizza in our town. Their pizza has always been consistent in quality and taste. They are always super friendly and accommodating with special requests.  I recommend checking them out.

Great restaurant for a small town! Awesome service, HUGE portions for the price, and the food is to die for.
